Spaza shops are more than just small convenience stores — they are the heartbeat of South Africa’s township and rural economies. Employing millions and contributing billions of rands annually to the economy, spazas remain a critical pillar of grassroots trade. Yet, they often face systemic barriers such as limited access to funding, infrastructure, and business support services.

At Two Cent Solutions, together with our partners, we are embarking on an ambitious journey to assess and engage with over 125,000 spaza shops across the country. This initiative aims to formalize, finance, and empower spaza owners, enabling them to scale sustainably and compete effectively in a changing retail landscape.

In this article, we explore:

  1. The current state of the spaza shop industry and its role in South Africa’s informal economy.
  2. The opportunities for growth, including digitization, supply chain integration, and financial inclusion.
  3. The challenges spaza shop owners face, from access to credit to regulatory hurdles.
  4. The role of representative bodies such as SASTA and others that advocate for spaza owners.
  5. Our vision for the future: creating structured pathways that link spazas with markets, funders, and development institutions.

This is more than an economic conversation – it’s about creating inclusive growth, transforming township economies, and unlocking the entrepreneurial potential that already exists at the grassroots.
